Federal Emergency Food & Shelter Funds Announced, Available

Sumner County, Tenn., has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

Sumner County, Tenn. has been awarded $19,169 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. This award is a $2,500 increase over last year’s award.

The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and the USA division of United Way Worldwide, which will provide the administrative staff and function as a fiscal agent. The Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas of the country.

A Local Board made up a local government representative, the United Way of Sumner County, American Red Cross, Catholic Church representative, Advocate for the Homeless and Community Representatives will determine how the awarded funds to Sumner County, TN will be distributed among emergency food and shelter programs. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant set forth by the National Board, organizations chosen to receive funds must:

1.) be private voluntary non-profit or government organization with a 501(c)3;

2.) have an accounting system;

3.) practice nondiscrimination;

4.) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs in Sumner County, and;

5.) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

Qualifying organizations are encouraged to apply.
