Meet our new Interim CEO, Amy Ramsey

On October 1, 2025, we welcomed Amy Ramsey as the Interim CEO of United Way of Sumner County. Amy is a longtime Hendersonville resident of more than 30 years. She attended Ball State University, where she studied Accounting and built a career spanning accounting, advertising, marketing, public relations, health and fitness and sales. Early in her career, she managed a staff of 10 at Notre Dame University’s National Institute for Trial Advocacy before transitioning into sales and business development.

Since stepping away from the corporate workforce, Amy has devoted her time to community leadership, serving on boards including United Way of Sumner County, the YMCA Advisory Board, Leadership Sumner, Young Life, and the morning Rotary Club of Hendersonville. A charter member of the Hendersonville Evening Rotary Club and a founding committee member of the Hendersonville Half Marathon, she has consistently focused on event organization, fundraising, and volunteer coordination to strengthen her community.

Beyond her professional and civic involvement, Amy has been married to her husband Scott for 34 years. Together they have raised four children and are proud grandparents to three grandchildren.

Impacting our Neighbors at Second Harvest Food Bank Backpack Program

The Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee Backpack Program supplies children who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend with discreet packs of food slipped into their school backpacks on Friday so they will have food to eat at home.

Ms. Jones coordinates the BackPack Program at a local elementary school. She gets student referrals from teachers in the school, including a program that serves students experiencing homelessness. There are 35 children total enrolled in the BackPack Program in her school. She says the surrounding area's population is primarily low-income and students are very open about their needs.

She says, "It's heartbreaking to hear, 'I don't have any food when I go home.' They're so thankful to get the food. They get two free meals here, and there's also an after-school program that some can go to. It's a godsend. Students who go through many transitions can have behavior issues, but enrolling them in the BackPack Program helps. Parents might be embarrassed or not know that they can ask for help, but when they find out about these resources, they're shocked that this is something we can offer. The food bags are part of a wrap-around service. When a teacher identifies a student who needs a food bag, that's a flag for us to help them with other services. Then, their grades and everything else start to improve."

Ms Jones' message to donors: "Thank you. It goes back to how we have so many wonderful things during the school day, but this is one of the only things that helps kids after school or on break. It has been really helpful for the kids and families facing hunger."

Stuff the Bus 2025: A Community United for Students

Thanks to the generosity of our community, this year’s Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive was quite a success! Together, we collected more than 4,000 school supply items valued at around $3,500, all to help students in Sumner County start the year with the tools they need to succeed.

These supplies are already making a difference through our partner agencies and programs, including distribution to students experiencing homelessness through the Sumner County Schools McKinney-Vento program. Backpacks filled with supplies also went to students from families served by:

United Way Agency, Gallatin Shalom Zone, recently shared this success story about a participant in their Children & Youth Programs:

"We are thrilled to introduce you to Pedro*, who we first met more than ten years ago when he was in 2nd grade and began attending our After School Enrichment Program. Coming from a large family who had recently immigrated to the United States, he was a first-generation English speaker who was a perfect fit for the After School Program where he received homework help, enrichment opportunities, and assistance acclimating to American culture.

Over the past several years, Pedro and his family have continued their involvement in Shalom Zone and many of our programs and events, including Summer Camps, Street Feed, Urban Leadership Experience, After School Enrichment, and volunteer projects.

Pedro continued to be a high achiever and graduated with honors from a Sumner County high school. In writing his college application essay, he focused on the support, positive experiences, and life altering opportunities that he received through Shalom Zone.

He is currently attending a Tennessee university and is Chair of his fraternity's Philanthropic Council. Pedro stays in touch with us and credits his experiences through Shalom Zone as the impetus for his desire to pursue a career in non-profit and future philanthropic endeavors.

'Without Gallatin Shalom Zone, I would not be where I am today. When you experience the kindness and encouragement from such a welcoming environment, you can't help but give back,' says Pedro, and giving back is definitely something Pedro is passionate about.

ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, is a way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget that covers all necessities.

For far too many families, the cost of living outpaces what they earn. These households struggle to manage even their most basic needs - housing, food, transportation, childcare, healthcare, and necessary technology.

When funds run short, cash-strapped households are forced to make impossible choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent, filling a prescription or fixing the car. These short-term decisions have long-term consequences not only for ALICE families, but for all of us.

WHO IS ALICE?

Despite the critical nature of many jobs to keep our local economies running – educating our youngest children, keeping our ailing parent safe – these workers often struggle to keep their own households from financial ruin.

ALICE is your childcare worker, the cashier at your supermarket, the gas attendant, the salesperson at your big box store, your waitress, a home-health aide, an office clerk. ALICE cannot always pay the bills, has little or nothing in savings, and is forced to make tough choices such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent. One unexpected car repair or medical bill can push these financially strapped families over the edge.

2025 STATE OF ALICE - Sumner County Summary Report - .pdf:

In 2023, based on the Federal Poverty Level, (FPL), 9% of Sumner County households were defined as living in poverty. Yet this measure failed to account for an additional 30% of the county’s households - more THREE times as many - that were also experiencing financial hardship. These households are known as ALICE: Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. They are working and earn above the FPL, but do not make enough to afford basic expenses where we live.

In 2022, financial hardship in Sumner County continued to be shaped by the conflicting economic forces of the pandemic. These powerful crosscurrents — COVID-19, inflation, wage growth, and the expansion and expiration of pandemic public assistance — impacted how many Sumner County households were below the ALICE Threshold of Financial Survival.

In 2022, Sumner County had a total of 79,326 households. 37% of them were below the ALICE Threshold (living in poverty or considered ALICE - making above the FPL, but less than what it costs to live in Sumner County.) Workplace Giving Campaigns are extremely important to the work we do at United Way of Sumner County (UWSC). Each year, companies participating in our Workplace Campaign help us allocate thousands of dollars in critical funds to support the agencies/programs serving Sumner County residents. This money also supports our 211 service, United Way’s 24/7 help line connecting those in need to the resources that can help them.

Hosting a Workplace Giving Campaign is a great way to create positive change and give back to the community where your customers do business, your employees reside, and your children go to school. Workplace Giving campaigns represent collective action in giving, volunteering and advocacy. By joining the current movement of dozens of corporate partners in our community, you are joining a group of workplace leaders committed to making Sumner County a better place for everyone to live, work and play through creating opportunity for all.
