One of United Way of Sumner County's unique roles in our community is connecting people and organizations together through volunteer opportunities. There are many ways to discover volunteer opportunities in your community.

UWSC Volunteer Opportunities

Submit your information on the SIGN UP tab to add your name to our available volunteer roster, to volunteer for a specific project or event listed below, or to ask for additional details about our volunteer opportunities.

Community Impact Projects:

Mom & Baby Care Drive - Spring: Event collects diapers, wipes, feminine products, and personal care items to be distributed to United Way Agencies who serve moms and babies. Companies can sign-up to be a public drop-off collection site or to host internal collection campaigns within their own business. Volunteers are needed for pick-up, sorting, and distribution of items.
Winter Care Drive - Winter: Event collects new hats & gloves and gently used coats. Host an in-house collection drive at your business, volunteer to pick up collected coats, assist with sorting collected coats, etc.
United We Feed Drive - collects canned goods and non-perishable foods. Companies can sign up to be a public drop-off location or conduct an internal collection campaign. Volunteers are needed for pick-up, sorting, and distribution of items.
Group Volunteer Projects- scheduled as requested: Organize a work crew from your business, church, club, or neighborhood to accomplish tasks at a United Way partner agency. Visit the Group Volunteer Projects page to learn more and request additional information.

UWSC Events

Fall Classic Golf Scramble - Fall: Be an event volunteer, assist with set-up and clean-up, and more.
Gala United - Spring: Be an event volunteer, help collect donated auction items, assist with event set-up and clean-up, and more.

Committees

Allocations Panels - April - June each year: UWSC relies on an all-volunteer allocations process to determine how we invest resources in the community. Our Allocations Volunteers go through a required training session, review agency applications, visit partner agencies, listen to recorded agency presentations, and meet to deliberate allocations decisions. Continuing Opportunities

Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency Meals on Wheels is seeking Volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels in Gallatin or Hendersonville. Meals are usually picked up for delivery around 10:30 on weekdays. Mid-Cumberland Human Resource Agency Long-term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking Volunteers to advocate for the rights of residents in long-term care facilities like nursing homes, assisted living facilities and homes for the aged in Sumner County. CASA is seeking diverse volunteers to serve as advocates for Sumner County children involved in court proceedings primarily as the result of abuse and/or neglect. CASA speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts and promotes and supports quality volunteer representation for children to provide each child a safe, permanent, nurturing home. Community Life Bridge is a volunteer-driven membership program available to mature adults over 60 who no longer drive. They pair volunteer drivers with riders to bridge the transportation gap. They are seeking volunteers to drive twice per month for rides that can be up to 3 hours. Volunteers may select the rides that work for them. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm. Drivers must be at least 21, complete background and driving record checks, and have a valid TN drivers' license and insurance. Our Community Fund
Making a gift to United Way of Sumner County (UWSC) is the most effective way to help our whole community. Donations to UWSC go into our Community Fund and are managed by our Allocations Process where, at the end of our fiscal year, a team of Allocations Volunteers from all over the county, representing various demographic groups, thoroughly vets each agency who is seeking funding by doing site visits and reviewing applications, financial documents, and video presentations. In addition, the Allocations Volunteers review the latest in community needs data to determine the best way to allocate the money in the Community Fund to have the greatest overall community impact. The Community Fund supports our work to ensure that no one lives in poverty or in poor health; that our neighbors’ basic needs are met; that all kids have an equal chance to learn and succeed; and to assist those who are recovering from trauma or abuse.

Making a Designated Gift
Some donors prefer to direct or “designate” all or part of their gift to go to one or more specific agencies or to another United Way office. We process these donor directed gifts as a service to our donors and ensure that each agency receiving designated gifts is a 501(c)(3) organization. Space is provided on our paper pledge forms to write in designated agencies and amounts. Donor names and gift details are forwarded to designated agencies unless the donor chooses to remain anonymous or if an employer does not provide us with detailed donor gift information.

Agency Payments and Acknowledgment
Designated gifts made to our UWSC Funded Partner agencies are sent in addition to any grant funding provided through the allocation of dollars from the United Way of Sumner County Community Fund. No administrative fees are charged to our Funded Partner agencies: they receive 100% of your designation. Payments are made monthly to these agencies.

Administrative and Fundraising Cost
For gifts designated to non-partner agencies and other United Way organizations, we currently charge a service fee of 15% to cover the costs of fundraising, collecting, processing and distributing these donor-designated gifts. (The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance recommends that responsible charities spend no more than 35 percent of income on administrative and fundraising costs.)

Old Navy corporate volunteers helping to sort and log items for 2023 Mom & Baby Care Drive

We encourages local businesses, civic clubs, churches and other groups to get involved in their communities by registering volunteer teams of five or more to help tackle a variety of projects for local non-profit health and human service agencies.

United Way of Sumner County (UWSC) will match groups of volunteers with projects at UWSC and/or our partner agencies. Examples of Group Volunteer Projects might include landscaping, painting, storage organization, logging & sorting items, etc. Volunteer teams can sign up for work hours convenient to them, and UWSC will match them with the appropriate partner agencies and projects.

Group Volunteer Projects help non-profits accomplish more than normal resources and capacity would allow, which lets them focus on what they do best - helping Sumner County neighbors! But volunteering as a group with UWSC is more than a chance to give back to the community, it is also a great opportunity for team-building and lets volunteers get a personal look at how our collaborative efforts are impacting neighbors in need.
