The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.
According to Feeding America:
- In 2021, 17,600 Sumner County residents (9.1%) experienced food insecurity.
- 57% of those who faced food insecurity in Sumner county in 2021 were "estimated to be above the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) threshold" which means they made more than 130% of the Federal Poverty Level and did not qualify for public assistance to feed their families. (At United Way, we know them as ALICE.)
- "In 2022, 49 million people turned to food banks and community programs for help putting food on the table."
You can help United Way of Sumner County meet the needs of hungry neighbors. We are collecting canned goods and non-perishable foods to be distributed to our partner agencies that provide food for people in need.
