Why I Volunteer with United Way of Sumner County
Each month, Volunteer Voices gives space to the individuals who help make our mission possible—volunteers who offer their time, insight, and compassion to strengthen our community. This month, we’re proud to feature Judy Jones, a dedicated Allocations Committee volunteer and donor whose words speak to the heart of what it means to give with purpose.
“I volunteer for allocations and donate to the United Way of Sumner County because I see so much value in what United Way does and how it does it. We have people in our community who need help, and there are programs and caring people working to provide assistance, whether it's food, shelter, healthcare or other needs. The United Way helps bring them together.
I respect United Way's 'holistic' approach. The United Way takes donations from many individuals, pools them together to create a difference-making sum, then reaches out to community volunteers to distribute those dollars among programs that have proven their effectiveness in meeting community needs.
Serving people in need directly or indirectly is part of serving God. Jesus stressed helping others and his followers should follow his example. I always leave the allocations process wanting to help grant applicants more than available funds allow. However, I also leave better educated about the needs and resources in Sumner County and inspired by the people who have such passion for and are providing important services for their clients.
I think everyone wants to make a difference in this life. Volunteering is a way to make a difference.”
Judy’s words reflect the deep connection between compassion and community action. Her thoughtful reflection reminds us that United is the Way™ to lasting impact—when we give together, decide together, and work together.
